Our skin cancer checks and services offer early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of skin cancer.
Why are skin checks so important?
Queensland has the highest rate of skin cancer diagnoses in the world. Skin cancer accounts for 80% of all new cancer diagnoses and about 2 in 3 Australians will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
Skin cancer can be deadly, but the good news is that it’s often highly treatable and curable if found early. That’s why skin checks are so important.
How often should I be getting a skin check?
During your consultation, your GP can recommend how often you should be getting skin checks based off your medical history and personal risk level. In general, an annual skin check is recommended for adults living in Queensland, but this can differ depending on your level of risk.
Alongside this, you should also see one of our GPs if you notice any melanoma or skin cancer signs such as:
- new moles
- changes in a mole’s size, shape or colour
- changes in the outline of a mole
- a mole that becomes rough, scaly or ulcerated (like a sore)
- moles that itch, tingle, bleed or weep
- a spot or freckle that becomes raised or develops a lump within it
- a spot or freckle that changes colour or is varied in colour
- spots or freckles that look different from others on your skin
What can I expect during my skin cancer check?
You can expect the skin check to take between 20 and 30 minutes, therefore please book long consultation for skin cancer checks. Your GP will ask some questions regarding your levels of sun exposure and protection, medical history, family history and any previous excisions before performing a detailed examination of your skin and discussing management or treatment if necessary.
